  • Was shipped to Boston and sold as a slave to a wheatly family

  • While she was with the wheatly family they encouraged her to study,which very few slaves were allowed to do

  • At the age 20, Phillis took her second trip across the Atlantic Ocean

  • She went to London to help sell her newly published book of poems

  • Published first poems in 1770 supporting American Independence

  • Bought,freed, and educated by Quaker family

  • Former African - American slave
